Best Water Softener Brands (Ranked by Warranty, Valve and Support)
Quick answer: the brands with the strongest published warranties are the ones you buy online or through a dealer. SpringWell and SoftPro, sold online, offer lifetime warranties on their tanks and valves (with shorter terms on electronics and, for SoftPro, the valve’s moving parts) plus a 6-month money-back guarantee. Through a local dealer, Kinetico’s Premier Series covers all parts and tanks for 10 years, and EcoWater and Culligan cover their tanks for life. If you want parts you can find anywhere, choose a softener on a standard Fleck or Clack valve. Store brands such as Whirlpool, Rheem, GE and Morton are easy to buy, but cover most parts for only one to two years.
Our ranking:
- SpringWell: best warranty bought online
- SoftPro: longest electronics coverage online
- Kinetico: best dealer warranty on all parts
- EcoWater: long dealer warranty on its top series
- Culligan: lifetime tank and resin, with rental options
- AFWFilters (Fleck): best for standard, repairable parts
- Whirlpool: best warranty at a store
- A. O. Smith: three years on parts at Lowe’s
- Rheem, GE and Morton: short parts warranties
How we ranked: we haven’t tested these softeners ourselves. We read each brand’s published warranty, checked which control valve it uses and how easy parts are to get, and noted how you get support. The details come from the brands’ own pages, manuals and spec sheets.
How we ranked the brands
- Warranty on the parts that wear. Most brands cover their tanks for 10 years or more, so tank warranties barely separate them. What does is coverage on the control valve’s moving parts and the electronics, which are the parts most likely to need replacing. See how long water softeners last.
- The valve and parts. Standard valves such as the Fleck 5600SXT and Clack WS1 are made by valve companies and used by many sellers, so parts and manuals are easy to find. Store and dealer brands list valve parts under their own part numbers, so parts usually come from the brand, its dealers or compatible-part sellers.
- Support. Online brands support you by phone and you install it yourself or hire a plumber. Dealer brands install and service it locally, usually at a higher price; see our cost guide. Store brands have phone support and, for GE, an authorized service network.

The brands, ranked
SpringWell
SpringWell sells direct online. Its warranty covers fittings, tanks, housings, bypasses, valves and in/out heads for the life of the system, with 5 years on its solid-state electronic heads. A 6-month money-back guarantee applies too.
- Valve: a SpringWell-branded electronic head (the page doesn’t name the valve maker)
- Watch for: the warranty covers only the registered owner living in the home where it was first installed, and ends if the system is moved
Good to know: SpringWell also makes the FutureSoft salt-free conditioner, which has its own lifetime warranty against defects. See our best water softeners for the full specs.
See it at SpringWellSoftPro
SoftPro also sells direct, with a 6-month money-back guarantee. For its Elite softener it lists lifetime coverage on the resin and brine tanks and the control valve body, 7 years on electronics, 5 years on the piston, seals and spacers, and 10 years prorated on the resin.
- Valve: an upflow control valve (SoftPro’s page doesn’t name the maker)
- Also: an optional Wi-Fi salt-level sensor with an app
Good to know: the valve internals (piston, seals and spacers) get 5 years, not lifetime. Our high-efficiency guide covers the Elite in detail.
See it at SoftProKinetico
Kinetico’s Premier Series softeners are non-electric twin-tank systems: moving water powers the valve, and one tank is always ready while the other regenerates. Kinetico’s warranty covers all parts, including resin and bypass valves, and the tanks for 10 years. The Signature and Essential Series get 5 years.
- Sold: through local authorized Kinetico dealers, who offer a free water test
- Watch for: the warranty covers parts only, not labor or freight
EcoWater
EcoWater sells through local dealers. Its 3700 Series spec sheet covers the tanks and media for the original owner’s lifetime, the valve body for 10 years, the electronic faceplate for 7 and other parts for 5. It also has Wi-Fi monitoring through EcoWater’s app.
- Watch for: coverage depends on the series. The entry 1100 Series sheet gives 3 years on the valve body, electronics and other parts.
Culligan
Culligan’s local dealers test your water, install the softener and service it, and you can buy, finance or rent. For the Aquasential Smart HE it lists lifetime coverage on the tank and resin, 10 years on the circuit board, valve body (not its internal parts), salt container and brine valve, 5 years on the meter and sensors, and 1 year on the whole unit.
Good to know: Culligan says its local dealers handle support. Renting can make sense if you’re not staying long; see our cost guide.
See it at CulliganAFWFilters (Fleck 5600SXT)
AFWFilters builds two-tank softeners on Pentair’s Fleck 5600SXT, a widely used home control valve, so seals, pistons and manuals are easy to find. Its owner’s manual covers the valve for 5 years and the mineral tank for 10.
- Sold: on Amazon
- Best for: do-it-yourselfers who want to repair it themselves later
Good to know: if you’d rather have a dealer install a standard valve, many build on the Clack WS1. See Clack WS1 vs Fleck 5600SXT.

Whirlpool’s one-piece cabinet softeners are made under license by Water Channel Partners. The WHES48 gets 2 years of parts and labor, which Whirlpool extends to 10 years if you use its cleaner every four months, plus 3 years on the control board and 10 on the tanks. It also has the highest NSF/ANSI 44 efficiency rating we’ve found.
See it at WhirlpoolA. O. Smith
A. O. Smith’s softeners are sold at Lowe’s. Its warranty covers mechanical and electronic parts for 3 years and, per its product page, the media tank, main control valve and brine cabinet for 10, the longest standard parts coverage of the store brands we checked. You need proof of purchase from an authorized A. O. Smith reseller to claim it.
See it at A. O. SmithRheem
Rheem’s softeners are also made by Water Channel Partners, the warrantor named in its manual. The RHS18 gets 1 year of parts and labor, 3 years on the control board and 10 years on the tanks.
See it at RheemGE
GE covers its softeners for 1 year on the whole unit, 3 years on the electronic monitor and 10 years on the brine tank, the last two for the part only. Its support pages send owners to an authorized SmartWater service network for repairs.
See GE’s warrantyMorton
Morton’s M20 to M34 softeners cover parts for 1 year, without labor, and the tanks for 10. Its Wi-Fi M45C adds a year of labor and 3 years on the control board. Its efficiency ratings are among the best, and they’re sold mainly at Menards. See our Morton review.
Who makes the store brands?
Several store brands come from the same company. Whirlpool’s and Rheem’s manuals both name Water Channel Partners of Minnesota as the warrantor. Morton’s manuals say only that its softeners are made for Morton in Woodbury, Minnesota, but its M45C shares 32 part numbers with Whirlpool’s WHES48. Similar cabinets with different warranties are a good reason to compare the warranty, not the badge.
