Best Water Softeners for Iron (and When You Need an Iron Filter)

Quick answer: a water softener can remove some iron, but only dissolved (clear-water) iron and only within limits. Penn State Extension says softeners are generally recommended for iron only when the iron is dissolved and under 5 mg/L (ppm), the pH is above 6.7 and the hardness is 3–20 grains per gallon (gpg). If your water comes out rusty, smells of rotten eggs, or has more iron than that, put an iron filter before the softener. For clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, a softener rated for it, like the SoftPro Elite for well water, is usually enough.

Our picks:

How we chose: we haven’t installed or tested these systems ourselves. We matched each maker’s published iron, manganese and sulfur limits to Penn State Extension’s guidance, and we say where a figure comes only from a seller’s listing.

Does a water softener remove iron?

A softener removes hardness by swapping calcium and magnesium for sodium. It can swap out dissolved iron the same way, which is why many softeners handle a little. Penn State Extension explains the limits:

The softener flushes the iron it catches during backwashing and regeneration, but buildup can still coat the resin over time. That’s what iron cleaners are for. For reference, Penn State cites drinking water guidelines of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Iron causes orange-brown stains, and manganese black ones.

A maker’s rating can be higher than Penn State’s general 5 mg/L guideline: Whirlpool rates the WHES48 for 12 ppm of clear-water iron, though its own manual notes that Wisconsin requires extra treatment above 5 ppm. If your iron is 5 ppm or more, we’d follow Penn State and add an iron filter.

Our picks

Best softener for low iron

SoftPro Elite Smart HE for well water

SoftPro’s well-water version of the Elite is rated for hardness plus clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, as long as there’s no sulfur odor. It uses a downflow control valve programmed for well water. If your test shows more iron or a smell, SoftPro sells it as a bundle with its AIO Iron Master filter.

  • Iron: clear-water iron up to 3 ppm, no odor
  • Sizes: 32,000, 40,000, 48,000 and 64,000 grains
  • Warranty: limited lifetime (see terms), plus a 6-month money-back guarantee

Good to know: SoftPro’s page doesn’t list a manganese limit, so ask before buying if your test shows manganese.

Best store-bought softener for clear-water iron

Whirlpool WHES48

Whirlpool rates the WHES48 for up to 12 ppm of clear-water iron and up to 160 gpg of hardness, and says it’s designed for city and well water, with a built-in self-cleaning filter for sediment. Its NSF certification covers hardness reduction and salt efficiency; the iron rating is Whirlpool’s own.

  • Iron: clear-water (dissolved) iron up to 12 ppm
  • Capacity: 48,000 grains at its highest salt setting
  • Flow: 11.9 gpm rated service flow
  • Warranty: 2 years parts and labor, 3 years electronics, 10 years tank

Good to know: above 5 ppm, follow Penn State’s guidance and put an iron filter first, even though the rating is higher. More on this softener in our high-efficiency guide.

Best single-tank pick on Amazon

AFWFilters Iron Pro 2

The Iron Pro 2 combines softening and iron reduction in one tank, using fine-mesh resin with a Fleck 5600SXT valve. Seller listings rate it for up to 6 ppm of iron and 6 ppm of manganese, which covers many wells with moderate iron.

  • Iron and manganese: up to 6 ppm each (seller listings)
  • Capacity: 64,000 grains in most seller listings
  • Valve: Fleck 5600SXT digital, metered

Good to know: we couldn’t confirm the iron rating on the manufacturer’s own documentation, and one listing shows a 48,000-grain version. It isn’t a sulfur filter, and acidic water should be neutralized first.

Best iron filter for high iron or sulfur

SoftPro AIO Iron Master

When iron is too high for a softener, or the water smells of rotten eggs, a dedicated iron filter goes in front of the softener. The Iron Master uses air injection to oxidize iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide, then catches them in Katalox Light media and backwashes them away automatically, with no chemicals or salt.

  • Limits: iron up to 30 ppm, manganese up to 7 ppm, plus hydrogen sulfide (SoftPro’s figures)
  • Sizes: 1.0 cubic foot (needs at least 5 gpm from your well pump), 1.5 (7 gpm) or 2.0 (10 gpm)
  • Warranty: limited lifetime on the tank and core components, plus a 6-month money-back guarantee

Good to know: check your well pump’s flow rate before choosing a size, since SoftPro lists a minimum flow for each. Penn State says oxidation followed by filtration is the most effective treatment once iron plus manganese tops 10 mg/L. Iron-removing cleaners for your softener

Even a softener that’s rated for iron can build up iron on its resin over time. A resin cleaner dissolves it so the next regeneration rinses it away. Follow the label, and don’t mix a cleaner with other chemicals.

Best iron cleaner

Pro Products Rust Out

Pro Products makes Rust Out for softeners on iron-bearing water. It turns the rust and iron coating the resin into a clear solution that rinses away during regeneration.

  • First cleaning: dissolve 1 cup in 1/2 gallon of cold water, pour it into the brine well (or the salt tank when the salt is low), then regenerate manually. Repeat for a heavily fouled unit.
  • Upkeep: add 1/4 cup for every 40 lb of salt you put in the brine tank

OUT Filter Mate Water Softener Cleaner & Salt Booster

Summit Brands’ cleaner removes iron, lime and mineral buildup, and you can layer it in with your salt so every regeneration gets a dose.

  • First cleaning: dissolve 2 cups in 1 quart of warm water, pour it into the brine well (or the salt tank when the salt is low), then regenerate manually
  • Upkeep: add 1/2 cup for every 40 lb of salt

Good to know: its Amazon listing describes it for light iron, under 1 ppm. For more iron, start with Rust Out. Our guide to water softener cleaners compares more options.

Sizing a softener when you have iron

Iron uses up softener capacity, so count it as extra hardness: most sizing guides add about 4 gpg for every 1 ppm of iron. With 15 gpg of hardness and 2 ppm of iron, size for about 23 gpg. Our water softener size calculator does this for you.

Frequently asked questions

Will a water softener remove iron?

Some. It can remove limited amounts of dissolved iron. Penn State Extension says softeners are generally recommended for iron only below 5 mg/L, with pH above 6.7 and hardness of 3–20 gpg. Rusty water, a sulfur smell or more iron than that call for an iron filter first.

How much iron can a water softener remove?

It depends on the model. SoftPro rates its well-water Elite for 3 ppm of clear-water iron, sellers rate the Iron Pro 2 for 6 ppm, and Whirlpool rates the WHES48 for 12 ppm. Many standard softeners have no iron rating at all.

Do I need both an iron filter and a water softener?

Only if your water is hard and the iron is beyond what a softener can handle. If your water is soft (under about 3 gpg), an iron filter alone may be enough.

Does the iron filter go before or after the softener?

Before. The filter removes oxidized iron and sulfur so they don’t foul the softener’s resin. If your pH is low, an acid neutralizer goes before both. Our well water guide shows the full order.

What cleans iron out of a water softener?

An iron-removing resin cleaner such as Pro Products Rust Out. Dissolve it as the label says, pour it into the brine well and run a manual regeneration.

What’s the best setup for well water with iron and sulfur?

An iron filter that also handles hydrogen sulfide, such as an air-injection filter like the SoftPro AIO Iron Master, followed by a water softener.
